Skitarius

The Skitarii are the warriors of the Adeptus Mechanicus. They generally have more advanced weaponry and equipment than their Imperial Guard equivalents, due to the technological expertise of their Techpriest masters. Bionics are quite common and devices such as weapon links and sensory feeds are also common amongst them.

“Skitarii” is the Mechanicus’s official term for all military forces under its command (except for the Collegia Titanica, though the Legions may possess their own Skitarii forces). It is a term equivalent to the Imperial Guard as it generally includes almost all combat personnel and armor that the Mechanicus possesses. Skitarii are also known as Tech-Guard (or Tech Guard) to outsiders, and the singular form of Skitarii is “Skitarius.” The term “Skitarii”, however is often used to reference only the augmented infantry.

Skitarii are often armed with similar equipment to the Imperial Guard, though this can vary massively based on which Magos, Mechanicus Organisation or Forge World has raised and equipped them. There is little standardization or central command of Skitarii across the Mechanicus, as each individual regiment is the personal army of a particular Magos. For example, the Skitarii of the Titan Legion Legio Invicta are gene-bulked humans with weaponized limbs and augmetic armor, whereas a different type of Skitarii investigated the dead world of Tarsis Ultra, and were seen to be wearing something similar in both function and design to Terminator armor.

Skitarii use the following Advance Scheme.

Characteristic Simple Intermediate Trained Expert
Weapon Skill 100 250 500 750
Ballistic Skill 100 250 500 750

Skitarii begin play with a lasgun with 4 powercells, flak armor, a laspistol with 2 power cells, an axe, sword or maul, 3 days of rations, a canteen of water, and the livery of the Machine Cult they serve. They also receive an individual cognomen, which serves as an identity card, and serves to identify the Skitarius to technological devices and personnel of their Machine Cult via short-range wireless transmission.

They receive the Mechanicus Implants Trait as well, cybernetic systems installed by their patron Machine Cult. Installed within these implants is an explosive charge. Should the Skitarius attempt to disobey an order issued by a Tech-Priest of their Machine Cult, or to knowingly attack or fire upon such an individual, there is an 80% chance that the charge explodes, dealing 3d10+10 damage to the Skitarius’ head, ignoring Armor and Toughness. Furthermore, engrammatic encoding ensures the loyalty of the Tech-Guard, requiring a Hellish (-60) Willpower Test to resist the lawful orders of a Tech-Priest of the Machine Cult to which the Hyspastis belongs.

Additionally, Skitarii, as part of their hypno-indoctrination, engrammatic programming and training regimen, receive the Man May Not Serve Two Masters special rule.

Man May Not Serve Two Masters: The Tech-Guard of the various Machine Cults are owned, mind, body, and soul, by their Tech-Priest masters. They revere not the Saints of Talis nor the God-Emperor of Mankind as does the bulk of humanity, but instead the Machine God in its guise as the Omnissiah, which is widely held (though by no means universally) to be the God-Emperor. This grants the Skitarius a +20 bonus to resist mind-control, possession, and similar will-subverting effects. It also means that the Skitarius will not easily turn against their own Machine Cult. Captured Skitarius must be painstakingly re-trained and re-programmed to be used in the armies of another Machine Cult. This does not happen often, as it is often easier to kill the Skitarius and recycle his cybernetic augmentations for use in a more-malleable subject.

Upon qualifying for Rank 6, the Skitarius decides on (or is selected for) a further path of development. These paths represent combat specialties. The Hyspastis path is ideal for Skitarii who prefer scout and sniper tasks, line infantry, and stealth operations (as much as augmented soldiers can perform such). The Sagitarius role is designed for those Skitarii who prefer either heavy weapons and ordnance or close-quarters combat and assault mission parameters. The Tribunes are the officer ranks of the Skitarii Tech-Guard. Although actual Tech-Priests of the Machine Cults maintain overall command, the field and staff officers of the Skitarii are Tribunes.

Hyspastis

Rank 6: Hyspastis

Upon being accepted for Hyspastis training, the Skitarii receives the upgrade Dermal Plating (4). This grants the soldier 4 Armor Points on the torso, which stacks with any worn body armor. Upon attaining Rank 6 and entering training for the Tribune role amongst the Tech-Guard of the soldier’s Machine Cult, they are implanted with a Vox Unit. This vox unit acts as a personal communicator to a range of 100 kilometers (under ideal conditions) and can also be used with a Challenging (-10) Willpower Test to scan for and intercept other communication signals. It can also support security encryption, reducing the success of other Tribunes from doing the same to them by -30, though recipients of their transmissions must have security-enabled communication devices.

They are also equipped with a Good-Quality Machine Interface Unit.
